Happy St. Patrick's Day!
We all have our favourite colours that we like to wear, dress our homes with, and express our personality through. There is actually a psychological component to colour that many of us might not realize. For example, "blue" is known to be calming and make one feel at ease while "red" is a more debatable hue as some find it agitating and others find it exciting. Green happens to be a colour that resonates positively with majority of people. We see green used in various industries and branding schemes as it almost acts a neutral. We also see the colour green in holiday colour schemes, like Christmas or St.Patrick's Day. Aside from these elements, I think green truly originated as a calming colour by being associated with nature. We'll dive deeper into "Nature-Based Design" next month, but for now, it's important to acknowledge how our human bond to nature relates to our acceptance of the colour green. Along with the grass and trees that make up a picturesque landscape, green is also seen in nature through herbs, vegetables, animals and even under-water plant life. Green is a representation of life, living things and the earth as a whole. No wonder our human nature is attached to such a universal colour!
Using the colour green is quite easy to achieve. There are various tones and shades of Green that can cater to any style. Mint and Sage green are on the lighter and more pastel end of the spectrum to achieve a casual, yet refined look. Olive Green has a bit of a brown undertone to work as a neutral. Finally, Forest and Emerald green can be used in bold designs while bringing an elevated and sophisticated mood to any space. The classic Primary shade of green plays well in a youthful setting, but can be a tad overwhelming if not used correctly. Green can be an accent or used in a complimentary, analogous or monochromatic way, according to the colour wheel:
To celebrate the various shades and tones of the colour green, I want to showcase some thoughtful interiors that use the colour green effectively:
